Kits

When I'm ready to create something, I love having EVERYTHING I need to make it right at my fingertips.  Sometimes those things might be time-consuming to gather, so I thought I would design some fun, small, projects, assemble all the items needed, and offer them as kits.  The first kit is Feathered Friend and it's a magnetic needle keep necklace.  The fabric is pre-printed with the embroidery design, no tracing needed!  I have glued a super strong magnet to the inside of a large 2 1/2" button blank for you so it's ready to go.  Just stitch it up, cover the button, and sew the necklace cording on!  Everything you need is included in the kit.

The next kit I have available is Bee Humble.  Bees are the true caretakers of my garden and I wanted to pay tribute to them with this little 3" x 8" hanging.  Everything is included in the kit, even the little wooden stick!

$15

Moda #12 Contest

Flutterby pincushion

Thank you so much for joining me! It's my turn to share my project for the Moda 12 Designers Contest!  If you haven't visited with me before, welcome.  I have the good fortune to design fabric for Moda and I also design quilt and embroidery patterns.  Hand embroidery is one of my favorite ways to spend my time so I hope you will indulge me for including embroidery in this project.  Of course, if you aren't a hand embroidery enthusiast this project lends itself to machine embroidery too.  So if you have some fun stitches on your machine that you've been wanting to play with now is the time!
My project for this contest is a crazy quilt pincushion.  I have always had a fondness for crazy quilts but so far I've never had the time to make one.  This little pincushion was just the right size to scratch that "crazy" itch I had.  I can't wait to see the variety of fun pincushions you all come up with!

PRIZES!
The rules -
1. You need to use at least 5 different fabrics, most of which need to be from any of my past fabric lines.

Tips to get you started:
Start with the focal fabric.  I fussy cut a butterfly from Garden Notes Moda fabric.  Make sure to leave at least 1/2" around the design.  Cut 4 sides - any shape! Or, embroider a small design for your focal point and fussy cut around it.

Start adding the coordinating fabric.  Always start with a straight cut side.  Leave plenty of room on each side of the fussy cut piece. Use 1/4" seam allowance.

Flip and press.  Trim the extra following one of the sides of the fussy cut piece.

Add fabric to each of the remaining sides of the fussy cut piece.  Press and flip as before.  Continue until all 4 sides of the fussy cut piece are surrounded
For further instructions click HERE for a free download.

Once your pincushion is stuffed it will be ready to use!  BUT if you want to make it really special, you can take one more step and add a nice finishing touch.  I like to make my own cording using DMC floss and a Custom Cord Maker.  Not only is it pretty, but it's super fun to make the cording.

Remember I mentioned prizes?  Make sure you post a picture of your pincushion, or email it to me, by June 30th to be eligible.
UPDATE!
A big thank you to everyone that posted pictures of their lovely pincushions!  The winners were notified and Moda is sending them some nice prizes.  Thanks again!

The Splendid Sampler

I am so happy to share my Splendid Sampler block with you today!  Thank you for taking the time to stop by my blog.  I LOVE  embroidery so when I designed my block I knew that would be the direction I would go.  I know how creative you all are and I'm hoping to see some amazing renditions of this block using applique and/or piecing.

For my design I wanted to share my love of all things hand made.  My hands are always busy, whether with needle and thread or with a paint brush (or snacking on popcorn).  One of the things on my bucket list is to make a crazy quilt so I wanted to honor that dream too!

Buttermilk Basin Summer Blog Hop

Summer in Portland, Oregon - City of Roses

Summer Fun!

Thank you for joining me on my day of the Buttermilk Basin blog hop!

I like to spend my summer days in my backyard watching the plants grow, the birds flit about, and soaking in a little sun.  Yes, it does get sunny in Portland, Oregon!  It actually can get too hot for me, but nothing that a cold beer can't handle. Last year we had a record breaking 29 days in the 90's.  I live in a little brick bungalow and by the 10th day it was resembling a pizza oven.  I can get a little cranky when I overheat.

My neighbor calls me a "Lady Gardener", because all I like to do these days is light pruning and picking a stray weed here and there.  I can also be tempted to harvest our fresh raspberries.
My favorite summer fruit!

When it comes to "farmer" type's, I leave the heavy labor to my 80 year old Mom.  Seriously!  I just talked with on the phone the other day and she was spreading 2 yards of mushroom compost.  Now that lady has a green thumb!
Mom's front yard
Summer is also our time for family traditions.  We spend a week with my husband's family in Black Butte, Oregon and a week with my family on the Oregon coast.  It's a fun time filled with lots of laughter and eating way too much good food.  My sister-in-law always seems to introduce me to a new temptation or two.  Have you ever tried s'mores using Reeses Peanut Butter cups? Fab.

My favorite go-to recipe for get togethers is one my mother-in-law gave me 30+ years ago.

Click HERE to download this recipe

One of my favorite summer days is the traditional pottery painting day I have with my nieces.  We have been doing this for at least 10 years now and I look forward to this special time I get to spend with these girls.

Tweet Home

Most of the stitching I do is embroidery which I can do anywhere.  If it's a beautiful day you will find me in my backyard stitching away and listening to an audio book.  The last one I finished was Watership Down.  I even stitched up my rendition of Hazel for an upcoming project!

Outside of my studio window
The stitchery I designed for this Blog Hop was inspired by a bird's nest outside my studio window.  I love the care that bird's put into crafting their homes.  I decided to add a birdhouse instead of a nest, but it's still home. I hope you like it!
This free pattern is called Tweet Home and it measures 3 1/2" x 8".  For a free PDF
copy of the pattern click HERE.

Stitches from the Garden

Stitches from the Garden is almost here! Just in time for all things spring.

Last spring I moved my studio to a room with windows looking out onto our backyard.  Watching all of the green leaves pop out and the buds opening up, I was inspired to design this book.

I wanted to share my love for painting in this book too.  With a happy heart, I set out to paint little nature scenes along with some of my favorite garden quotes.

Original painting included in the book.
The process of designing projects for the finished embroidery pieces usually starts with a rough sketch.  Keeping the theme of a garden sketch book, I have included these project sketches in the book as well.  I hope you enjoy seeing the process and inspiration that created this book!

Moda All in a Row - my turn : )

All in a Row - Martingale

Thank you for hopping over to my post!  I chose to make a row celebrating winter and all the fun that comes with a snowy day.  This row is a combination of pieced blocks and an embroidery portrait of one of my oldest friends.
I hope you like it!
All in a Row - Winter Friends
I'm sharing my Blog Hop day with the beautiful and talented Camille Roskelley.  The row she designed is fun and bright with lots of star points which I love!
All in a Row - Twinkle by Camille Roskelley

I used fabric from my new line called Count Your Blessings (in shops May 2016) to offer another look for Camille's row.

Moda - Count Your Blessings
My new line, Count Your Blessings, has a sweet panel I'm stitching up into a wall hanging pattern.  I can't wait to see it quilted and finished.  I think I'll hang it in my studio to remind myself everyday to count my blessings.

PRIZES!
Leave me a comment naming one of your blessings and I will draw 3 winners at random to win a copy of this lovely book!  The drawing is February 1st.  I will email the winners.
